In the cloud, experience matters

I am fortunate to have spent the last 15 years of my career in software sales. Specifically, I’ve focused on enterprise content management (ECM) solutions for a variety of industries including the healthcare, insurance and commercial markets. Of course, during that time, as technology has evolved, so have the needs of organizations. Staying current, innovating and leading the way with new solutions are basic requirements. The kinds of solutions that customers desire today look very different than they did 10 or even five years ago.

What hasn’t changed? The core tenets behind why people buy and what they look for.

Proven solutions, proven experience
Every customer that I’ve ever worked with asks certain questions prior to buying OnBase: Have you done this before? Have you done this with an organization our size? Have you implemented this solution previously? Have you integrated with this application before? Our ability to answer “yes” to these questions and also perform above and beyond expectations has driven our success.

Today though, customers are facing a unique question that few providers can answer “yes” to. Have you done this in the cloud? While hosting an application in the cloud may sound simple, ECM has many complexities that require the expertise and experience to do it right.

Hosting your company’s most critical information is not something to be taken lightly. You need to look no further than recent security breaches with large retailers to understand the importance of security. But availability, speed of access, redundancy, data privacy and compliance are just a few of the added considerations when building an ECM cloud infrastructure.

How do I know? Because Hyland launched OnBase in the cloud before… well… before it was called the cloud. In fact, Hyland launched OnBase in the cloud before it was generally accepted by corporate IT departments and before it became the preferred method by which organizations deploy applications around the world. Hyland launched OnBase as a hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) application back in 2003. For more than 10 years now, we’ve been delivering solutions in the cloud for customers with rigorous security, availability, collocation and compliance requirements.

That’s why more than 600 OnBase customers have chosen to leverage the OnBase Cloud.

Lead, don’t follow
When Hyland launched our cloud offering, we did so with an eye towards the needs of small and midsize businesses (SMB). With a cloud solution, they avoid the infrastructure costs associated with adopting ECM for their organizations and operationalize their expense through a subscription model. These seemed like key obstacles to remove, allowing SMB buyers to leverage an enterprise class ECM. That was and still remains true.

To our surprise though, it was instead enterprise-class, multi-national companies who were the early adopters, immediately seeing the value of a world class ECM infrastructure with collocated data centers around the world. Even more intriguing was that these early adopters included banks with the highest security requirements. They put their trust in OnBase Cloud.

Eleven years later, Hyland leads the way in cloud-based ECM, with data centers throughout the U.S. as well as Sydney, Tokyo, Amsterdam and London. With more than 1.5 billion pages in the OnBase Cloud, 1.1 petabytes of customer content, more than 1 billion documents, Hyland has the experience, infrastructure and functionality required for small departmental applications as well as enterprise-wide deployments.

Experience matters
With the growing number of customers leveraging the OnBase Cloud, we’ve seen almost everything in terms of requirements from customers: ISO 27001 compliance, SOC2 and Safe Harbor standards; burstable bandwidth for maximum upload and download speeds; three-copy backup management spread across multiple physical locations; load balancing; centralized server management and upgrades. It’s safe to say that experience matters.

With all of the changes in the technology landscape over the years, the questions that customers ask change at a faster and faster pace. What doesn’t change? The importance of mitigating risks when selecting a solution. When evaluating ECM in the cloud, experience matters. OnBase has it. And while it isn’t free, that’s for a very good reason.

  1. Great article. Security in the cloud is one of the main blocker for businesses to move to the cloud. I would think twice to put my sensitive data in the cloud. People doesn’t fully trust cloud solutions… yet! They’ll probably change their minds in the next years!
