#GuidewireConnections and the cloud part 2: No two clouds created equal
Having worked in insurance for more than 28 years, spending half that time selling solutions to the industry, it has given me an opportunity to watch the evolution of IT and insurers’ approaches toward deciding which deployment models to use: on-premises or the cloud?
In part one of this blog series, we learned about many of the benefits of the cloud that insurers are realizing today, both from an IT budget perspective, and even more so from an array of business benefits. Now, we turn our sights to how to choose the right solution.
Familiarity doesn’t mean superiority
As 2015 gave way to 2016, Synergy Research – a firm that examines infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), private and hybrid cloud – reported on the cloud marketshare wars. The playing field looks like this:
- 31 percent: Amazon Web Services
- 9 percent: Microsoft
- 7 percent: IBM Cloud and SoftLayer
- 4 percent: Google
- 4 percent: Salesforce
Hybrid clouds are where we are seeing the most traction in insurance, where businesses can connect their applications on a cloud-to-cloud basis.
Why? Because no two clouds are created equal. While there are leaders in the market that provides private clouds for insurers to, for example, host their core system platforms, they might not design those particular clouds specifically to manage content.
So even though you easily recognize the names on the aforementioned list, that doesn’t necessarily mean they can manage the important business content your employees need instant access to, which can be difficult if it is stuck in a cloud silo that your solution can’t integrate with. Familiarity also does not mean they employ highly secure, world-class hosting architecture. This is an extremely important aspect you need to keep front-of-mind when choosing your cloud content management solution.

Insurers choosing to move their applications to the cloud need to have options available to ensure that they will have the right infrastructure in place to harness the full features of their solutions. Not all private clouds have the expertise or the infrastructure design to manage every aspect of your solutions.
