The killer app for TriZetto Facets and QNXT users

I am a recovering accountant. I am also old enough to have seen how certain computer applications are so compelling, they literally change the way we work. These applications are often referred to as killer applications or “killer apps” for short.

In 1979, long before Steve Jobs and his merry tribe created apps for a smartphone, there was a killer app that changed everything for accountants, the financial industry, the computer industry and for the business world as a whole. It was called VisiCalc – the first spreadsheet program. When I first worked with it in the mid-80s, it blew my tiny, bean-counting mind.

It was so innovative, Ted Nelson, a pioneer of information technology, said, “VisiCalc represents a new idea of the way to use a computer and a new way of thinking about the world.”

New columns and rows

Why the nostalgic walk down Killer App Lane? Because recently I had the opportunity to be a part of a team that created another killer app, this time for TriZetto’s Facets, QNXT and CareAdvance products.

TriZetto’s products do a masterful job of health information management for health plans. This information – including member, provider, claim and enrollment information – is called structured data, because it fits neatly into a structure of rows and columns in large databases. (Interestingly, database technology builds on other killer apps, like VisiCalc.)

These things don’t fit!

Unfortunately, health plans include documents, faxes, emails, letters, paper claims, appeals, applications, portal requests, screen prints and other information that do not fit nicely into structured rows and columns. This unstructured data is a challenge for most, if not all, health plans today.

Yes, even the most technically sophisticated organizations remain challenged with unstructured information. This unstructured data and documents are also referred to as content and can affect everything from patient financial services to clinical data management.

That’s where enterprise content management (ECM) systems can help. ECM is all about easily capturing and organizing this unstructured content and making it instantly available to the right people when they need it.

The killer app for health plans

So, what about the killer app? What TriZetto Facets, QNXT and CareAdvance users really want and need is all data and documents available right from within the TriZetto Interface. No searching, no looking in file shares, or SharePoint or someone’s desk.

That’s why we developed a solution that notifies Facets, QNXT and CareAdvance users when documents – and other content – are available via a small bubble in the corner of their screens. Regardless of which screen they are viewing, regardless of how many screens they have up on their workstations, it tells them how many documents are available.

One click and they can view the document and answer the question at hand. It’s that simple.

Why is this a killer app for health plans?

Because it’s all about empowering frontline health plan workers to quickly and effectively serve members, providers and one another. It’s about user experience. It’s about giving users ALL the data they need so they can answer questions, solve problems and delight members or providers.

The combination of TriZetto Facets, QNXT and CareAdvance managing a health plan’s structured data along with a robust ECM system managing unstructured documents and content truly is a killer app for health plans.
