Memorable Moments from #HIMSS16

2016 HIMSS demoHIMSS 2016 was surely a remarkable event! More than 40,000 health IT professionals, executives and clinicians – as well as 1,300 health IT vendors – made their way to Vegas for what was probably one of my favorite HIMSS conferences yet.

Here are my five best moments from HIMSS16:

1. HIMSS Latin America Workshop

The representation from Latin America was incredible this year. I’m proud and excited to see how HIMSS is growing the international presence at the show, which also included several of our customers.

2. Learning about the new HIMSS EMR Adoption Model

John Hoyt, EVP of HIMSS Analytics, shared his insights into the new HIMSS EMRAM. These changes highlight not only how the EMR is the central place for patient information, but that it also needs support from enterprise content management (ECM) and vendor neutral archive solutions.

It will be great to watch how the changes evolve over the next several months. In the end, a global model for creating more complete patient records is a huge success.

3. Crossing the digital divide – meeting in person

I met attendees from a wide variety of specialties, several of whom are already using our software and have been our advocates for years. It’s always a pleasure to meet new people, gain new perspectives, hear new ideas and turn emails and phone calls into handshakes and in-person conversations.

4. Introducing new functionality

Although I heard a lot about how our product is helping our customers, the most common question I got was, “What else can it do? What’s new?”

I’ve talked to some of these customers in the last three to six months and they still ask those questions – that’s how fast our software changes and how much work our R&D team puts into our solutions. I’ve been at Hyland for more than 13 years and it’s simply what we’re known for; we continually listen to our customers and evolve our software to be the best enterprise information management platform with the best service and (undoubtedly and gratefully) the best customers.

5. Going mobile

Sure, I used the HIMSS mobile app. It’s great to have an interactive map in your pocket instead of carrying around a backpack full of heavy paper guides.

But in addition to the map, I was fortunate to have some great conversations about the future of mobile in healthcare. If you’ve ever gone into a waiting room and wondered why you have to complete the same giant stack of registration forms, you’ll understand the value of our paperless registration solution. From admission forms to clinical consents, we provide those forms electronically without asking you to fill out the same information over and over.

Thank you for everyone who visited us in the OnBase booth. It was a pleasure seeing you, having a drink with you and hearing how you are using technology to improve patient care and advance the goals of your organization. #VivaLasVegas!

Stacey Less has had a variety of roles since joining Hyland nearly 13 years ago, including: software engineer, project manager and manager of Strategy & Innovation. In 2013, she moved to the Healthcare team as a Business Consultant, focusing on mobile solutions. Before joining Hyland, Stacey was a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional for seven years and served as a technical editor for Prentice Hall and Wiley Publishing. Her certifications include MCSD, MCDBA, CDIA+, a Project Management Certificate and an MBA. In addition to her work at Hyland, she is now an adjunct professor for Ohio University’s IT MBA program.
