“Dude, catastrophic failure.”

According to my technician, the only way I could avoid it was by replacing my mountain bike’s suspension, hydraulic brake system, and rear wheel. I won’t get into how much this was going to cost me – mostly because I don’t want to remind my wife – but I will say it would have been far less costly if I hadn’t waited so long to get a tune-up.

Since moving from Chicago to the mountains in Asheville, NC, more than four years ago, I’ve been riding my bike nearly every day. I put a lot of miles on it, many of which have been a little … bumpy, so ‘catastrophic failure’ is not an option.

At this point, it was clear to me that relying on my beloved bike to continue flying down mountains and across streams without an upgrade was, indeed, setting myself up for failure. I had been missing out.
