#HylandHackathon: Tech outreach efforts continue to grow with inaugural hackathon in December

While giving back to the communities where we live and work is a value Hylanders hold close to our hearts all year round, the holidays seem to bring out the best in us. This year is no different. And as 2015 closes out, we’re trying something new and innovative.

In December, Hyland, creator of OnBase, will host its inaugural hackathon. The theme? “Using technology to benefit the local community.” And if you live, work or go to school in Northeast Ohio, we hope you’ll get involved.

For those who are unfamiliar, a hackathon is an event in which computer programmers, software developers, graphic designers, interface designers, project managers and technology enthusiasts collaborate on projects in competition with other teams.

We’re inviting high school and college students, but anyone interested – in any age range – can get involved. If you’ll be in the Cleveland area December 18 – 20, we hope you’ll consider joining us.

Please register by December 11.

What can I expect from the Hyland Hackathon?

Well, like I said before, our theme is “using technology to benefit the local community.”

We plan to reach out to area small businesses and local non-profits to see if our hackathon can help them check a technology goal of their to-do lists, like building a mobile app or improving their external website.

Participants will have the opportunity to come up with their own innovative ideas. As long as they’re from scratch and they can benefit the local community in some way.

Teams will be limited to four people each. You can come into the weekend knowing who your team members are, or we can help assign you to a team once you get here.

Throughout the weekend, we will be hosting workshops where you can learn something new that might help you as you work on your project. We’ll also have plenty of snacks and drinks to keep you energized!

And yes, there will be prizes. We don’t know what those prizes are yet, but they’ll be good.

Hyland Hackathoners

While the December event is our first official #HylandHackathon, sponsored by our Development department, there are several Hylanders who are hackathon enthusiasts.

These passionate folks will help direct the hackathon, act as mentors and guide the event to success.

We hope to see you in December!
